I have to brag a little here ... about my beloved Howling Woods Farm wolves. Sampson, Bandit and Sierra play the wickedly delicious roles of fierce, snarling minions of evil in the new movie "The Sorcerer's Apprentice", starring Nicholas Cage, to debut on Thursday. View the trailer here ...
In real life, these bundles of fur and massive teeth are anything but malicious. Mischievous, yes. Malicious, no way. Although not in DC, this is an organization I still hold close to my heart and support whenever I can.
Based in New Jersey, HWF is a sanctuary for wolves and wolf-dog hybrids. People should never 'buy' wolves or wolfdogs, because when they do there's a scratch-the-head moment when they realize -- hey, this isn't a lap dog. When those geniuses come to that understanding, it's time to get rid of the oversized canine and that's where HWF comes in. Founder Mike Hodanish and his tireless volunteers provide a home for these abandoned creatures -- creatures who prefer raw meat to dog treats. The love and understanding of nature emanated by these people is effortless, and raises the survival count of many orphaned wolves and wolfdogs.
Although they're not 'my' dogs, I hold a special place in my heart for all of them (and yes, we know Ahote's maybe my favorite). After all, there isn't anything greener than adoption and preservation of a creature that's been exploited and abandoned. We should all be so lucky to have the ability to care for something that others didn't have the courage to.
